Week 5: Layout and Composition

This week we have learned about organization, layout, and composition. I found two effective and two ineffective layouts/designs. In an effective layout and design, the elements were placed in an aesthetically pleasing way. In the Golden Ratio layout, the ratio is approximately 1 to 1.618 and is simplified to the “rule of thirds”. Hence, elements on the page distributed content in relation to the sidebar widths. The other effective image layouts are designed using a grid layout system with two, three, and four proportional columns and rows.

The grid system works well with the golden ratio layouts and with a help of white space or negative space that defines harmony and reflects the rhythm. Also, the combination of these simple rules determines the pleasing set of size, position, and proportion which makes the look and feel of the layout aesthetically appealing. However, bad designs also can be implemented using the golden rule and a grid system with columns and rows. These elements are not the only designer’s considerations of a successful design, but an addition to many other design practices.
